Battery Storage Design

Battery storage allows for the optimisation of self-consumption of renewable energy sources i.e. you consume a greater proportion of the renewable energy you generate.

Solar PV generated electricity that is not consumed by electrical loads in a building, is typically curtailed or exported back to the grid at a rate significantly below cost price. Storing and using unused energy is known as time shifting.

Further, battery storage facilitates the process of using the grid supply to charge batteries when electricity tariffs are lower e.g., at low demand periods in the early hours. This cheap, stored energy can be utilised to fully supply a building under low load conditions and also limit the requirement for grid electricity during periods of higher demand.

A third application of battery storage systems is to use them as an energy store, to deliver power to dedicated protected circuits during a power cut, otherwise known as island mode.

We most frequently deliver this function using a contactor enclosure that is installed close to the distribution board, but we can consider alternatives such as a ‘front of house’ ATS system.

This is typical on commercial and industrial premises where life safety systems require an alternate energy supply if the grid fails.

We may also consider installing a separate, protected circuit distribution board that could be employed for emergency lighting for example, allowing for safe evacuation in the event of grid failure.

At Delta T MEP, we specialise in providing bespoke renewable energy solutions which may see us recommend solar PV only, panels alongside batteries or battery-only systems on some occasions.

All installations are fully specified in accordance with MCS guidelines, specifically MCS MIS 3012. We are happy to size, design and install bespoke battery systems. Our ability to customize solutions sets us apart from the average installer.

Some of the many benefits of battery energy storage systems include:

  • Enhanced use of renewable energy
  • Available power whenever required
  • Less dependence on the grid
  • Lower carbon footprint
  • Decreased electricity costs
